Time to Surface

Water levels looked to be finally settling and the trout are looking up. It's nice to return to Dry/Dropper rigs. In Upper Boulder Creek, large Royal PMX and a large Prince Nymph. In the Upper Thompson, small nymphs suspended. And in the canyon, hit that that early Caddis stuff then switch to Pandemics and Jujubaetis, Sparkle Wing RS2, etc. Enjoy.

Bellyache for the Frying Pan

A couple of days on the Frying Pan is always fun. Despite the tough weather, the top was really crowded. Six people in the Bend Hole. I went down canyon looking for new water. First day caught a ton of fish on standard rigs. Midday surface action was hot. However, the fish were a little on the small side for the Pan. The next day I experimented with Bellyache rigs that produced decent size trout including the 19 inch fat girl pictured here. Best rig of the day was something I call a Mal de Panza Doble (Double Bellyache). In the next issue of the Front Range Angler newsletter I will 'splain.

Low and Slow

Last Wednesday, I had the pleasure of guiding a charming family on the upper Big T. I must admit I was a little concerned because of the recent drop in flow from Olympia Dam from 20-14cfs. Six cfs may not sound like much, but at this level that was about 25%. Those conditions require very small stuff and a methodical approach. My guests were 15 and 10 years old. The ten year old had never fly fished. I was expecting a challenging day. Well it was, and they were up to the challenge.

Bellyache at the Lake

The ice is out at Mother Lake on the Sylvan Dale Guest Ranch, so my buddy Eric and I decided to go see what how those big Bows faired over the winter. The answer is yowza. We got a dozen to the net; all on Kolanda's Bellyache Minnow. The smallest was 19 inches and the largest was 22 inches all with bulging bellies. Click here for video.
