Last week (10-20-09), I  was speaking to my guide-buddy Paul. He told me that he had just been fishing South Boulder Creek above Gross Reservoir. He hiked down from the west (some road off of Magnolia.) He reported lots of good sized fish were taking Gurdle Bugs and Pheasant Tails. My experience three days later was different ...

The next day it snowed, and I had appointments on Thursday, so I went on Friday. I came in from the East side (trail head to inlet starts at the boat ramp on the south side of Gross.) The water looked great and the canyon was beautiful. However, I only saw one fish and that was the one I caught. I hiked and fished up from the inlet about three bends and not a fish in sight or even a strike. The water temp was 38 degrees so I had switched from the recommended large flies to a #24 UV midge.

At the top of my hike I finally found a decent (17 inches) Bow. I don't think Paul had gotten as far down as I had, so maybe all the fish had moved up to that point. Nevertheless, I didn't even see that one, he just took the midge and I am not sure he even knew he was hooked until I started bringing him up from his resting place on the bottom.

So, it seems that it is already time for tiny flies and with the forecasted weather patterns, it might not change until spring.
